A Major Affair

What’s your major? For many students in college that can be a very tough question to give an answer to. About 80 percent of college students change their majors an average of three times during their college careers. Going into college, students thing they know what they want to do in the future but soon realize how much is really out there for them to discover.

College sophomore Emily Holtz says, “I thought I wanted to pursue speech pathology, but taking classes last semester in communications I realized how much I loved it.” Many students like Emily come into college with a big idea of what they want but realize after taking a class that they have a greater interest in another area.

There is a growing number of possibilities for students to find their path in. Bloomsburg University offers 45 different majors alone. Students come to college thinking they have their life planned out, but most don’t. They are only used to taking the same six subject for the majority of their lives that they don’t know everything that is out there for them. Coming to college and taking those same six subject classes will not help in making the decision of what major students are really interested in.

When in doubt, take the class. There is such a large variety of classes out there, it can’t hurt you to take something you have an interest in. Most classes count somewhat towards your required number of credits, so why not take that class that sounds interesting to you? Those classes could even help you in the long run.

Professors advised me to take a range of classes because future employers tend to look for a large range of skill set when it comes to hiring new employees. Seeing different things on your transcript that you gained skills in could one day help you get your dream job. It shows that you are engaged and interested in learning new things and showing a wider range of knowledge in more areas then other applicants. Learn new skills, follow your heart, and take a few risks.
